“Wish” The disappointing performance of Disney’s latest film.

“Wish,” adds to a string of underperforming tentpoles in 2023, including “The Marvels,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “The Haunted Mansion,” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” While “The Little Mermaid” managed to swim to $569 million worldwide, it falls short of Disney’s prior live-action adaptations, like “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast,” which easily crossed the billion-dollar threshold. Similarly, Pixar’s “Elemental” recovered globally with $495 million, surpassing its lackluster opening weekend, but the studio has yet to reclaim its former glory, especially considering the shift in audience behavior towards Disney+.

Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, openly acknowledged the studio’s misstep in prioritizing quantity over quality during the pandemic, admitting, “We lost some focus” in a recent earnings call. Recognizing the need for a course correction, analysts anticipate that Disney’s return to emphasizing quality content will help the Magic Kingdom regain the enchantment that has been lacking.

As the studio heads back to the drawing board, the hope is to learn from past mistakes and deliver films that captivate audiences, restoring the magic that Disney is renowned for. The success of “Wish” during the upcoming holiday season is crucial for Disney, as they aim to demonstrate that a renewed focus on quality can bring back the sparkle to their cinematic endeavors.
